Prince
"Chaos & Disorder"
Warner Bros. Records

* 1/2

Eat this, Warner Brothers. Here's the last contractually obligated album that Prince needs to turn in and it's a messy, unfinished 39 minutes that bears a clear warning: "Originally intended for private use only."

Chaos And Disorder -- perhaps the nicknames of the employees who tossed together these leftovers -- is mostly upbeat short tunes that tend to show Prince experimenting with guitars, backed by his New Power Generation.

There's soaring Santana riffs on Into The Light and swirling, diving squeals on Zannalee, the closest thing to a real Prince tune, with it's humorous story line about police being called to a bedroom.

But the stories are never complete, the themes undeveloped and lyrics thrown together in trial runs. The young lady in Dinner With Delores eats "like a brontosaurus, she was packing it in." Despite it's self-assured title, I Rock Therefore I Am doesn't come off as strong, with ancient DJ scratches and a Jamaican rap about being cool in Minneapolis.

Follow Prince's warning: This is not intended for public listening
