Prince, Chaos and Disorder (Warner Bros) - 4 stars out of a potential 5

About the only notes you'll find lining "Chaos and Disorder" is a disclaimer from Whatchamacallit saying that the enclosed was released to fulfill his contract with Warner Brothers. Which might explain this stripped-down album with - yeah! - no loopy philosophy, no god, and no embarrassing attempts at who-knows-what (as happened on "Dolphin" from "Gold"). "Chaos and Disorder" kicks things off with a fat B3 sound, and things rock along from there - one great tune after another, in particular "I Rock Therefore I Am." Prince plays lots of guitar, backed by the New Power Generation and, among others, one-time local gal Rosie Gaines (though her contributions might be taken from previously unreleased material). "Chaos and Disorder" sounds like it was recorded in a real hurry; it sounds like outtakes from "Purple Rain"; it sounds great."
