The Hits & The B-Sides
|
Ccompiled by Warner Brothers, The Hits And The B-Sides was the first internationally released Prince Greatest Hits package. It was configured in two single albums, sold separately, or a three album package with the addition of the B-Sides. Disk one consisted of cleaner hits and disk two was the dirtier ones. No big surprises, just edits of the hits and, if the consumer chose the three album set, previously released B-Sides.
There were 4 previously unavailable songs in the set, one of which was the single "Peach." Some feel "Peach" is where Prince's contract problems with Warner Brothers started. Rumor has it that he was not too enthusiastic about how the label promoted the single, which he felt was strong. The rock track floundered commercially and the set did not generate a hit. The single album packages sold poorly and the triple album set did even worse. Shortly thereafter, Prince started to express an interest to get out of his potentially 100 million dollar contract with the label.
The set of B-Sides were a nice addition for collectors. Although, many complained about the fact that many were edited from their original vinyl releases. Still, in the compact disc age it was nice to have the songs in the new, better quality, format. For those who did not track down all the 7" and 12" singles, it was a quick way to attain all the rare tracks. An interesting inclusion on the third disk was "Power Fantastic." The previously unreleased song circulated among collectors for years, but was not one of the more popular outtakes. Thus, although it is a quality song, the addition of it seemed bizarre. The other disks included the previously unreleased "Peach," "The Pope" and Prince's bluesy version of "Nothing Compares 2 U."
