Lovesexy
|
Prince's spiritual side was showcased somewhat on Sign O' The Times, but Lovesexy brought this aspect of his music to the next level. After The Black Album was shelved at the last minute, due to it's negative content, Prince returned with an album that contained more "Positivity." Only on track, "When 2 R In Love," survived from The Black Album.
The CD version was programmed to run from beginning to end as one track. Some feel that is the reason why the album was a commercial failure. It is more likely, however, that the general public were put off by the nude album cover shot of Prince and the extreme religious lyrics of the album. After so many years of overly sexual lyrics, it was difficult to take a religious Prince album seriously. Albeit, Prince recorded several "Sunday songs" over the years such as "God," a Purple Rain B-Side.
Regardless of it's lackluster commercial performance, the effort is still wonderful. There are lots of interesting musical moments, such as the primary listener favorite, "Anna Stesia." The loose jam feel from the previous few years was present along with a further advancement of Prince's sound. His guitar playing, for one, seemed to have reached another level on the album.
